Iiris' Sweater – a cropped Aran cable sweater you make to your own measurements

Love traditional Aran cables but hate being boxed into a handful of predetermined sizes?

Iiris' Sweater is a size-inclusive, measure-as-you-go knitting pattern designed around your measurements rather than a fixed size chart.

This cropped, boxy sweater combines a bold Aran-style cable panel with an uncomplicated construction, making it a satisfying knit without complicated shaping.

Make it YOUR size

There are no fixed sizes in this pattern.

You measure your own chest circumference and use that measurement to determine how many stitches to cast on. From there, you can make the sweater:

• as wide as you need

• as long as you want

• with longer or shorter sleeves

• to suit your own proportions

The smallest recommended chest circumference is 32" / 81 cm, because the cable pattern needs enough width to work properly. Above that, there is no upper size limit built into the pattern.

This makes Iiris particularly useful if you often find standard knitting-pattern size ranges frustrating or simply prefer to knit garments according to your actual measurements.

Simple construction, striking cables

The lower body is knitted in the round, with the cable pattern worked across the front and a plain back.

The upper front and back are then worked separately and grafted together at the shoulders — this is the only seaming required.

The neckline is finished by picking up stitches and working a simple k2, p2 rib.

Sleeves are picked up directly from the armholes and knitted down towards the cuffs.

There is no waist shaping in the pattern. Iiris is intentionally designed as a relaxed, boxy sweater. If you have the knitting knowledge to modify shaping, you can adapt the silhouette to your preference.

Yarn

The sample uses DK-weight wool yarn.

Approximate yarn requirement:

300 m / 328 yd per 150 g

The sample uses approximately 385 g / 770 m of MyHome Living Sukkalanka (75% wool, 25% nylon).

Yarn requirements will vary depending on the size and length you choose to knit.

Needles

• 4.5 mm / US 7 circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge

• One long circular needle and one short circular needle, or needles suitable for Magic Loop

• Alternatively, double-pointed needles may be used for the sleeves

Gauge

20 stitches and 21 rows = 10 cm / 4" in stockinette stitch worked in the round

• 3 locking stitch markers

• 2 regular stitch markers

• Cable needle

• Tapestry needle

• Scrap yarn or an extra cable for holding live stitches
